Sea and coastal area increasingly undergoes intensive economic development and thus, natural resource and environment protection in those areas is critical issue of concern in many countries. In Vietnam, as the coastline is rather long with numerous estuaries, lagoons, wetlands and mangrove, environmental monitoring and biodiversity conservation is of great importance. In particular, Thua Thien Hue coastal zone and its Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon system plays far important economic and ecological roles. However, as the lagoon is overexploited and also critically vulnerable to the complex and unstable hydrodynamic and morphological processes, it undergoes undesirable changes and degradation and in turn, threatening the local sustainable development. This article is to present the result of the study on application of Integrated Assessment using conceptual model DPSIR (Driver – Pressure – State – Impact – Response) in developing a tailor-made set of environmental and social monitoring indicators for this area. The drivers taken into account include growing population and urbanization, agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, tourism and sea level rise.
